The trend was more prominent in bar soaps where most brands and private label were found to be following the trend with 4-5 soaps in a pack. As a result, bath and shower grew by 13% in value due to increased penetration in rural market and higher unit prices.

Competitive Landscape

Hindustan Unilever Ltd was the leader in bath and shower with 47% value share in 2013. The company maintained the same share as 2012. Hindustan Unilever Ltd was also a market leader in three categories: bar soap, body wash/shower gel and talcum powder with 47%, 34% and 58% value shares respectively. Reckitt Benckiser (India) Ltd was the leader in liquid soap with 48% value share in 2013.

Industry Prospects

Bath and shower value sales are expected to grow at a value CAGR of 4% at constant 2013 prices to reach INR203.4 billion by 2018. Acceptance of liquid soap and body wash/shower gel as more convenient products compared to conventional bar soaps and movement of customers towards high-priced products will fuel the growth of bath and shower during the forecast period.
