San Francisco, CA (PRBuzz.com) September 7, 2012 -- Hayward has asked the residents to look into replacing their old streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights.
City workers are looking for residents to join in the campaign to get the best results. Staff members have narrowed the choice of styles to three.
"We felt that since this was a very large scope project, and because there are so many different kinds of products, we wanted to get public feedback on their preferences," said Don Frascinella, transportation manager for the city.
"You will see a difference in the quality of lighting. The light looks cleaner, better," Frascinella said.
The workers have installed one of the three types of styles in downtown from Watkins Street to Foothill Boulevard. The poles have been marked A, B and C. Public workers have asked the residents to state which style they would prefer to see and the reason why they pick the particular style.
The C Street lights out of the three types of LED have been chosen by the city staff, which has had extensive experience with the different streetlights. The staff chose them by looking at the other cities and what those cities have been using. The lights are PG&E approved.
The city is spending $650,000 annually on street lighting energy which will see a drop after they look into installing the LED lights.
Hayward will be replacing 7,700 of its 8,200 streetlights later in the year switching the high-pressure sodium lighting.
"Some agencies that have switched over to LED have seen well over 60 percent savings," he said.
"As people leave Off the Grid on Monday nights, we hope as they're walking back to their cars they will take a look at the lights and give us some feedback," Frascinella said.
