San Francisco, CA (PRBuzz.com) January 23, 2013 -- Dina Abou Sway may have seen a new career future born alongside her new niece, as the new addition to the family has moved away to take up children's clothing design as a part-time hobby.
"When I used to make her clothes, I would buy things from Zara and I would customize them and give them away as gifts," Sway said.
Sway's hobby has been born from love, but it may take on a life of it's own if she is able to successfully turn it into a thriving business venture.
Sway is just one of the many local children's clothing designers that have found their way to some limelight in the past few years. Designers come from all styles of background, and most begin the venture as more of a hobby and attention-grabber than an actual business venture. Most have inspiration drawn from the children that are in their lives, as Sway herself certainly did.
The clothing often brings with it a local character, and Sways work certainly incorporates a Arabic style that is both sassy and vibrant. Sways work gives a nod the the Lebanese heritage that she carries with her, and reproduces the Beirut's popular style of miniature form.
Among the most successful designers of locally made children's clothes are the Skoff sisters: Paola, Carla, and Tania Skaff. The sisters are co-owners of Sunflowers boutique, located in Saifi Village.
In addition to styling children's fashion, Sunflowers sells women's clothing, as well as jewelry, and accessories, and has even opened points of sale from Dubai to France.
"We started with babies because my children were babies," Paolo said. "It was very simple stuff."
Paolo is a trained designer. Her and her sisters have learned to take on more difficult items such as pajamas, dresses, baby blankets and so forth. She stated that her own children are here greatest inspiration.
"They love it. Some of the designs are their own," she said. "They ask for particular colors, for example, the little one likes purple and the older one likes skulls."
