Darren Salkeld: Canadian Drought Relief Efforts are Urgent

The economic havoc wrought by Canada's exceedingly dry summer has won the attention of philanthropist Darren Salkeld.

New York, New York,  (PRBuzz.com) August 24, 2012 -- In recent weeks, many areas in the United States have suffered from inclement weather patterns--in particular, from drought. The excessively hot and dry summer that has affected so many Americans is hardly restricted to the States, however; America's neighbors to the north have also suffered from a severe summer drought. This crippling lack of rainfall has brought economic havoc to Canada's farmers and agricultural communities, and it has also won the attention of philanthropist Darren Salkeld, who says relief efforts are urgently needed.

According to the Toronto Sun, the economic effects of the summer's droughts are too severe to even be calculated. What is clear, however, is that many Canadian farmers are suffering and in desperate need of assistance. The article in the Sun notes that Canada's federal AgriRecovery framework has been invoked to help bring relief to the areas hit hardest. Meanwhile, the government has been asked to provide tax relief to farmers, and particularly to livestock producers, allowing them to delay payments on some of their earnings, as a way to cope with economic emergency ushered in by the summer dryness.

Darren Salkeld is a Canadian businessman who has found immense success in shepherding various companies toward profitability; he is better known, however, for his philanthropic work, which includes regular donations to global relief funds. Salkeld is naturally zealous for seeing relief efforts increased in light of Canada's drought. He has issued a new statement to the press, responding to the country's current needs.

"Coming through one of the driest summer seasons on record, it's no wonder that farmers across the United States and Canada are plagued with this adverse agricultural phenomenon," says Darren Salkeld in his press statement. "Droughts like we saw in July directly affect the growing of our national food sources." Darren Salkeld continues by noting that the current situation is one that affects citizens throughout Canada. "It's not just the farmers who are affected by this," he affirms. "The nation's crops and livestock in general need help, and that's a scenario that has implications for all of us."

Salkeld concludes his press statement with a dire prediction--and an urgent call for increased giving to Canadian disaster relief efforts. "Without proper drought relief efforts, the food inflation price will no doubt exceed historical averages by 2013," says Darren Salkeld.

Salkeld's predictions are echoed in the Toronto Sun article, which notes that, while some farmers are finding limited relief in crop insurance policies, the situation remains a troubling one for many Canadians, who fear the looming price increases that this seasonal drought could initiate.
