San Francisco, CA (PRBuzz.com) December 6, 2012 -- There are clearly alternatives to domestic work, as Rosita Sanchez Cumbicus proves with her cafe business.
She may be still be technically employed in the role of a domestic worker for a couple of hours each morning; however, her afternoons are filled with dreams instead of cleaning products, as she runs a cafe in the center of Loja in southern Ecuador.
Cumbicus has owned her cafe for two years, thanks to Faces, a microfinance organization that is handpicked by CARE International UK. The organization has been picked up by U.K.'s LendwithCare.org program.
"I used to be very shy. At the beginning of my marriage I only worked and didn't have friends or go out. My husband used to hit me - but not any more. Now I am financially independent, he has learned to respect me and he often comes to help me wash up at the cafe at the end of the day," says the mother of three.
Microloans are unlike bank or commercial loans, as they can start from the very small to necessarily moderate sizes. Lenders are asked only to lend what they can, and borrowers are put on a schedule of paid returns that they can handle to payback. Another important aspect of the loaning process is that a husband's signature is not required for microlending.
Luis Palacios Burneas, executive president of Faces, says: "We design products especially for women because they need more advantages and we see it as a way of tackling poverty as a whole. If you improve the woman's situation, you improve the family's situation."
Most importantly, Cumbicus' business lends her the opportunity to spend time with her children, something that is exceedingly difficult for domestic workers who burden long hours of manual labor.
"They are always telling me to rest but I don't want to," she says. "When I'm working at the cafe I can forget everything and be happy. I feel very proud of what I have achieved."
