As animal rights activists strive to educate the public on pet adoption, many potential owners opt to find a breed that is more "fashion-forward." Now, many adoption agencies, such as Cat Depot, are teaching others that rescued animals can still be a trendy option.

Sarasota, Florida (PRBuzz.com) August 16, 2012 -- The high number of abandoned cats and dogs continues to plague animal shelters all across America, motivating many activists to find ways to encourage pet owners to adopt these animals. While many organizations, such as Florida's non-profit Cat Depot, have encouraged many to adopt from local shelters, trends have proven to take away from this effort. In recent years, those looking for cats or dogs have opted for purebred pets, often encouraging breeding and allowing numbers of homeless animals to increase. However, a recent article from The Arizona Republic takes a new perspective on pet adoption that may have animal lovers reconsidering where they find their next pet.

According to the article, it is not that uncommon to find that an individual would prefer a certain kind of dog or cat over another. In fact, many pet owners forego pet shelters thinking that they will not find the type of pet they want at such a facility. Contrary to popular belief, the staff at Cat Depot, a non-profit organization specializing in cat adoptions, says that many times a pet shelter could have what one is looking for. The company states in a recent press release, "Amazingly purebreds and special breeds find themselves at shelters too. Call and ask your shelter what kinds of breeds they have available. You not only will find that special pet and save a life, but support your local humane organization."

Although Cat Depot encourages individuals to always look at what their local shelter has to offer first, the article showcases additional efforts from leading voices in the pet community. Recently PetSmart partnered with Arizona's Maricopa County Animal Care and Control to host pet adoption fairs in shopping malls, giving people a convenient way to see what the shelter could provide. By hosting such events, the organizations hope to make animal rescue a more fashionable practice among Americans.

Regardless of what is in style, Cat Depot volunteers understand that adopting a dog or cat is an act that comes from the heart. They encourage all interested parties to do thorough research on local shelters when searching for a new pet. Cat Depot also recommends PetFinder and PetRelief smartphone apps as a convenient way for users to quickly view what animals are available in their area.
