In 2014 three main factors accounted for declining sales of heating appliances. Firstly, the 2013 enforcement of BBC/RT 2012 on new houses continued to exert a regulatory pressure for energy-efficiency, which favoured the use of renewable energy sources and was a deterrent to traditional electric appliances. Secondly, the general slowdown in housing construction and renovation activities – which correlated with timid economic growth, high unemployment and the new Alur/Duflot laws on house rents – also directly impeded demand. Moreover, the winter temperatures in 2014 were less favourable to demand for heating appliances.
Competitive Landscape
With a 15% share of volume sales in 2014, Société Airélec (Groupe Muller) maintained its lead in heating appliances in the French market, followed closely by Groupe Atlantic (14%) and De’Longhi France (13%). Groupe Muller is a historically-established player which enjoys very broad merchandising and distribution nationwide. The company’s product line is extensively diversified to suit the different heating requirements of different income groups. In addition, its four key brands of heating appliances in France (Airélec, Applimo, Campa and Noirot, which are made locally) also leverage its well-known reputation.

Industry Prospects
Over the next five years heating appliances is expected to see a negative retail volume CAGR of 4% and a negative value CAGR of 6% at constant 2014 prices. The transition to alternative heating solutions for new housing constructions and extensions, in accordance with RT 2012/BBC norms, will remain the main impediment to the growth prospects of the category. Government policies aimed at promoting renewable energy sources are expected to accelerate the adoption of alternative heating appliances, such as heat pumps, wood boilers/stoves and micro-cogeneration solutions. By 2020 France will adopt a new thermal regulation, RT 2020/BEPOS, according to which new housing constructions and extensions will have to produce more or the same amount of energy as that consumed.
