Fernie, BC (PRBuzz.com) November 23, 2012 -- Fernie Alpine Resort is proud to announce the return of Junior Freeski Comp to Fernie on February 21-24. This year's event will be brand new as we have partnered with the International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association (IFSA) to be one of their National Event stops. Fernie is one of only 3 Canadian stops on their 2013 Junior Freeski North American Tour. Winners of the Fernie event will gain points towards being the North American Junior Freeski Champion and win great prizes from our sponsors! Competitors will be on natural terrain while being judged on 5 categories - Line Choice, Control, Fluidity, Technique and Style/Energy. To align with the IFSA qualification standards the event is open to skiers ages 12-18 with 4 categories - Boys 12-14, Girls 12-14, Boys 15-18 and Girls 15-18. All age cut off dates are based off of the age turned prior to December 31, 2013, with the exception of juniors 18 years of age may stay in the junior category until turning 19. Entry fee for the event this year is $160 USD, includes both tax and an event t-shirt.
Registration will be done online at www.athletepath.com. All competitors MUST have a 2013 IFSA membership in order to compete in the event. Memberships can be purchased on the IFSA website www.freeskiers.org.
Being part of the IFSA North American Junior Series, registration will be done according to the series pre-qualification registration protocol. 60% of the athletes will be pre-qualified into national events based off their 2012 IFSA junior series rankings, 35% of the remaining spots will be allocated to ski team quotas and 5% will be open. Registration will open as follows: (Competitors must have their IFSA membership prior to registering.)
• Registration - Opens Nov 28 at 7pm MST and closes when the event sells out. **Once the event is full a wait list will be started.
Helmets are mandatory for all competitors and all competitors must have valid medical insurance to compete in the event (USA competitors must ensure their medical coverage extends to Canada and to the nature of our event).
The Fernie Junior Freeski will also be part of the brand new RCR Jeep Junior Freeski Series which includes Junior events at Fernie Alpine Resort, Kimberley Alpine Resort and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. The Kimberley Jr. Freeski will take place on Feb. 9-10 and the Kicking Horse Junior Freeski event will take place March 2-3. Both the Kimberley and Kicking Horse event will be IFSA Regional qualification events and are open to skiers ages 7-18.
