Due to the April 2014 consumption tax increase, sales of watches in Japan gained strongly from the end of 2013 and saw their peak in March 2014. After the tax increase, consumer spending was depressed and watches sales dropped from the month of April 2014. High-priced watches saw an especially large fall-off in sales after the tax increase, and its recovery took a longer time than basic and mid-priced watches.
Competitive Landscape
Domestic watch producers Casio, Citizen and Seiko maintained their leading positions, with their combined sales accounting for 22% of value sales in 2013. Whilst these Japanese manufacturers have stronger share in the basic and mid-priced watch segments, they are busy with creating new brands to enter into high-priced watches. For example, Seiko has a few luxury brands such as Grand Seiko, Credor and Galante. In order to strategically develop these brands, the company opened 5 new stores under the name “Seiko Premium Watch Salon” to expand its network to a total of 27 stores across the country. Many of these salons are located in the department stores. Citizen also has a luxury brand, Campanola. Since many of Citizen’s watches are categorised under the basic and mid-priced segments, Citizen acquired Swiss watchmaker Prothor in March 2012. This led the company to manufacture high-end mechanical movements and develop luxury watch brands.

Industry Prospects
Value sales of watches are expected to decline by 1% in value terms at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period. The demand for watches in the basic and mid-priced segments is expected to slow down as consumers are not expected to purchase as many new watches as over the review period. High-priced watches, however, are expected to see growth, driven by the demand from upper-income consumers and international visitors. The growth in high-priced watches is also supported by domestic leading brands introducing high-end watches, aiming at the upmarket consumers.
