Following a rise in the Interior Consumption Tax (TIC), operators responded by increasing the prices of standard cigarettes which registered significant sales. Prices rose by Dh0.50 to Dh3.00 for the cigarettes most in demand. However, manufacturers maintained the prices of premium products due to their weak share gains over the review period. In addition, they aimed to maintain consumer interest in premium cigarettes given that the prices of premium cigarettes were too high for most mid- and low-income consumers.
Competitive Landscape
The cigarette category in Morocco is entirely privatised and is led by four companies - Societe Marocaines des Tabacs, an affiliate of Imperial Tobacco Group, Philip Morris International Inc, whose products are made and distributed under licence by Societe Marocaines des Tabacs, Japan Tobacco Inc, which is represented in Morocco by North Africa Tobacco Co, and British American Tobacco Middle East & North Africa.

Industry Prospects
With the entrance of several new products in 2013, cigarettes is expected to see stiff competition between manufacturers over the forecast period. This will mainly be because most products are positioned in the mid-priced segment, which is affordable to consumers. However, consumers will benefit from the increasing range of brands, which in turn will impact the share of existing brands. Thus, as a result, key player Societe Marocaines des Tabacs is expected to lose its monopoly.
