July 9, 2014 - Alicante, Valencia -- Online antique jewellery retailer Antiquities Giftshop often manages to acquire rare examples of ancient craftsmanship. The company has been sourcing Celtic, Roman, Byzantine and Mediaeval jewellery for more than 20 years, but sometimes, they acquire a piece that is so rare and beautiful that even the company's professionals are amazed. Their most recent acquisition is a pair of Roman gold earrings featuring intaglios – or gemstone carvings – of the mythological Gorgon Medusa. The earrings date from around the first century AD, and have come from a private collection.
Sales Manager Jennifer Marina says:
‘Here at Antiquities Giftshop, we are passionate about ancient jewellery, and we take a great interest in all our pieces, but these earrings are absolutely stunning. They are a perfect example of Roman craftsmanship, and, like many pieces of Roman jewellery, they feature a representation of a figure from mythology. In this case, it's delicate carvings of Medusa.
The earrings date back to between the first and fourth centuries AD, and they are absolutely perfect and wearable. They came to us from a private collection, and we are very keen to find an owner who will appreciate their unique beauty. Medusa herself was a uniquely beautiful mortal woman until she was turned into a Gorgon by the goddess Athena, and the earrings reflect that beauty. It's not often we acquire earrings in such a good condition, as they are more delicate than other items of jewellery, so we are very excited about these.'
Antiquities Giftshop sources and sells antiquities through its website, where there is a great deal of information about ancient artefacts and their provenance. The company ships world wide, and there is a certificate of authenticity with each item. New stock arrives on a regular basis, and items are professionally cleaned when necessary.
