Current value growth in 2013 slowed from the previous year to 2% but remained higher than the review period average. This was primarily because of large declines during the recession years at the start of the review period. Overall growth was steady but below the overall growth of store-based retailing. Consumers continued to be wary of discretionary spending and habits gained during the recession were difficult to break. There was mixed success within the channel as rising disposable incomes and shifts to online channels affected outlet types differently. Channels that were able to drive consumer traffic performed well while those that were unable to attract store traffic suffered as internet retailers picked up share.
