How Small Children Can Cause Fatal Accidents For Parents While Driving

May 19, 2014 - Dracut, MA -- A new study is suggesting that small children especially babies, are the biggest cause of distraction while driving, even greater than the much talked about cell phone, as much as 14 times more according to the study.

The top reason which was responsible for more than seventy five percent of accidents was a parent turning to see their child or baby.

It drops dramatically from there with less than twenty percent for talking with a child, and under ten percent for helping a child with food or drink.

Even when another adult was traveling in the passenger seat, the statistics had a very minimal change.

Some results discovered in the study where that the average driver took their eyes off the road a total of 4 minutes and 20 seconds during a twenty minute ride, that is an astounding twenty one percent of the total time driving.

New Mom's Affected Most

The scarcest part of this study was that mom's especially new mom's had it the worst. Because with all the stress and lack of sleep that comes with being a new mom, ten percent had accidents with their baby in the car.

Some of the main distractions where a baby crying, the mom trying to pick up a dropped toy or other item, and trying to feed a baby with a bottle.

"It's no wonder that public-safety experts are calling these interruptions a deadly epidemic. Distracted driving is thought to be the cause of 80 percent of all crashes, says Kate Hollcraft, a spokesperson for Allstate Insurance."

"However, parents of young children are especially vulnerable to distractions," says Hollcraft

Babies Main Cause for Lapse in Concentration

Research from the AAA foundation for traffic safety found that young children are as much as 4 times more distracting to drivers than an adult passenger, but babies make it a whopping 8 times harder to concentrate.

This is because when any parent hears their baby crying they want to now immediately what's wrong. Instead of reacting to the distraction there is an alternative that can eliminate the need to turn around it is a  backseat baby mirror.

A backseat baby mirror has found to be a helpful way to reduce distractions while driving. The mirror can be placed on a headrest in the back seat, and in conjunction with the rear view mirror, it allows for a full view of a baby in a rear facing car seat.

With a parent being able to see their baby without having to turn around, this should help reduce the amount of accidents. A parent can determine why the baby is crying and then make a decision whether or not they should pull over.

The mirror can also be used to communicate with smaller children without turning, again allowing the parent to asses the situation and make the smart choice.

What's the Answer?

Now it is hard to get the exact number of accidents that can be strictly blamed on parents being distracted by their young child or baby, but the facts don't lie and it is critical to make safe driving a priority.

Of course a  baby backseat mirror won't be the final answer to this issue, but it is a positive step in the right direction.

Parents have to be aware of the danger when distracted while driving, especially with small children and do whatever is in their power to reduce the risk.
