San Francisco, CA (PRBuzz.com) November 5, 2012 -- Laser eye surgery is not unheard of to many health insurance holders. There are even television commercials as the practice has become more common in the last half-decade.

CT Pillai, medical director of Harly Street vision correction clinic Advanced Vision Care, recently made a statement regarding the surgery not being only "desirable" for patients. He did note that it can in fact be a medical necessity.

"Glasses made to a very high or complicated prescription can be very thick and do not provide the adequate clear field of vision that severe poor sight needs," he said.

"Vision correction treatment is often recommended to older people as an alternative to wearing varifocal glasses because it eliminates the sense of imbalance caused by varifocals and greatly reduces the risk of falling."

Pillai noted that there are a plethora of medical reasons to seek eye surgery as a stronger alternative to other previously-held methods regarding sight issues.

"The most obvious [of these are] enhanced appearance and freedom from the inconveniences that come with wearing glasses and contact lenses," he said.

Surgery can result in one no longer requiring glasses. This can be especially helpful for those who partake is consistent physical activities, or cannot wear them due to particular work.

Contact wearers would also be alleviated of concern regarding their physical activities and consistent dependence on the supplemental equipment required.

"Despite the wide variety of contact lenses available, not everyone can tolerate them and [some] find their eyes are permanently dry and uncomfortable," Pillai said.

"But there are also many clinical reasons why laser correction treatment is recommended," the medical director added.

Wearing contacts for long periods of time can be a medical problem, as they have been known to enlarge cornea blood vessels.

Fitting can also be a difficulty, Pillai suggests, stating: "Some patients with astigmatism find that they can't wear contact lenses at all because they cannot be made to fit properly."
