Devil's Claw is a herb that is native to southern Africa. The name derives from the exotic looking fruit that has hooks that attach onto animals to spread the seeds.
Devil's Claw has been used over the ages in Africa to treat various health conditions, including arthritis. It is thought that Devil's Claw came first to Europe in the early 1900' where it was used to improve digestion.
Today Devil's Claw is primarily used to treat conditions that cause inflammation and pain, like arthritis. This is because Devil's Claw has strong anti-inflammatory effects. The active ingredients are believed to be iridoid glycosides called harpagosides, which are found in the root.
Actually few joint support ingredients have been shown to be as effective as Devil's Claw. Various studies have confirmed that Devil's Claw is statistically significant in reducing pain in people with osteoarthritis. It can reduce inflammation and swelling, and the associated joint pain.

Some people that took Devil's Claw were able to lower the dose of NSAID medication they needed for pain relief. Some evidence also suggests Devil's Claw may work as well as the osteoarthritis drug Diacherhein in improving osteoarthritis pain in the hip and knee after only 16 weeks of treatment".
Dogs also suffer from osteoarthritis. Today, Devil's Claw is widely used to fight inflammation and relieve arthritis pain in dogs as well as humans.
