New Testing Methods aimed at optimizing Oral Health

San Francisco, CA (PRBuzz.com) October 19, 2012 -- The human mouth is filled with hundreds of bacteria, some of which are beneficial, and others that are potentially harmful to oral and overall health.

The dental hygiene products you choose can have a tremendous effect on the cleanliness of your mouth, which is why researchers are focusing on the abrasive effect of toothpastes.

Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM in Halle, Germany are teaming with the Microtribology Centre in Karlsruhe to develop a new means of testing the abrasive effect of various toothpastes.

While toothpastes capable of removing plaque are useful, some are too coarse for teeth, creating damage over time through abrasion. These products actually strip the teeth of their enamel, a material that does not regenerate. Such damage is most obvious in the soft dentin region of teeth.

Using a single bristle on human teeth with a variety of toothpastes, researchers conducted a friction test in which they were able to characterize abrasion and determine how a bristle should be designed to help ensure optimal oral health for consumers.

"Our findings reveal that the RDA value of toothpastes correlates with the depth of abrasion; the higher the value, the greater the abrasion," said Dr. Andreas Kiesow, IWM team leader. "By analyzing the friction value we also identified a clear relationship between the friction behaviors of the bristle on the dental enamel and the abrasiveness of the toothpaste."
