(PRBuzz.com) July 18, 2013 -- Midland Traders could face up to two years in prison for selling a scam hair loss cream on a bootleg website. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, or MHRA, seized over 3,000 euros worth of unlicensed hair loss treatments creams that contain an illegal amount of minoxidil, the active ingredient in popular baldness treatments.
Minoxidil can cause serious side effects and create allergic reactions that including difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue, lips or face and tight throat if not used correctly. Hives are also another common side effect, and further tests and investigations are being conducted on the creams being sold by Midland Traders on the website.
If found guilty of selling illegal medicines, the Midland traders could go to jail for two years, and also face up an unlimited fine. So far, the MHRA and interpol have cracked down on 26.8 euros worth of illegal medicines being sold online, including fake viagra, skin lightening products and weight loss tablets.
The MHRA's Acting Head of Enforcement, Nimo Ahmed, said "these drugs were being stored in unacceptable conditions and supplied through illegal internet websites without prescriptions by people who are not qualified to write fill prescriptions.
