A recent study by the Cancer Institute of New Jersey concluded that many Latinas like Faccio participate in behavior that raises risk for certain cancers, such as skin cancer from tanning.
The researchers said that certain behaviors are correlated with "linguistic acculturation", a lot of times because it's a very good proxy for acculturation in general.
As the fastest growing ethnic growing group in the United States, Latinos need a special focus on health and how the cultures affect their health. The study was carried out by handing 788 Latinos from Western and Southern US questions in a poll that regarded certain behaviors. The researchers found that 39 percent of English-speaking Latinos did not engage in behavior that would help prevent cancer, such as wearing sunscreen or avoiding prolonged exposure to UVA light.
Elliot Coups, the author of the study, said that conforming to western ideals to beauty was an important part of linguistic acculturation, but the safety and risks were disregarded to fit that stereotype or expectation of society.
The bottom line, according to Coups and his team of researchers, is that doctors need to focus on English-speaking Hispanics about the dangers of sunbathing and how to take proper precautions by using sunscreen.
