(PRBuzz.com) March 28, 2013 -- Notting Hill Housing took part in the London Evening Standard housing debate on Wednesday 20 March, at 6.45pm in the Emmanuel Centre, Westminster.

The event was chaired by BBC's Jon Sopel. On the panel was Richard Blakeway, London's deputy mayor for housing; Rob Perrins, group MD at Berkeley Group; former London mayor Ken Livingstone; broadcaster Janet Street-Porter; writer and philosopher Alain de Botton; and Evening Standard columnist Rosamund Urwin.

As part of shared ownership week 2013, Nottinghill Housing also released and article, detailing their significant contribution to providing affordable housing to Londoners over the years.

Motivated to provide affordable, good quality housing for Londoners, a group of local residents formed Notting Hill housing trust in 1963. Fifty years on providing affordable homes for Londoners is still their concern and still one of London's greatest challenges.

Notting Hill Housing became the first London housing association to offer a Shared Ownership scheme back in 1982. They had been looking into Shared Ownership housing since 1976, in fact.

Housing the 'squeezed middle'

The idea stemmed from the concern of their first director, John Coward, to foster mixed communities with residents with a range of backgrounds and incomes. Shared Ownership provided a rung on the property ladder for 1980s' squeezed middle - those who earned too much to be considered for the Trust's rented homes, but could not afford to buy a home of their own. It still does.

The main principles of Shared Ownership haven't changed since then. It is a part-rent, part-buy scheme where applicants own a percentage of the home and rent the remainder at a subsidised rate.

The first scheme consisted of 20 homes in West London. In 2012 we sold 460 homes. This year Notting Hill Housing will build 1400 new shared ownership homes across the capital. In addition to new properties in developments that are currently available - including Millennium Horizon in East London, Parkside Place in North West London, and Beacon in SE1 - they plan to provide a further 550 new homes in developments available later in 2013.
