This exhibition derives its rationale from the title of a major painting by Kes Zapkus. Through its painterly rhetoric, Matter & Conjecture, 1990, would persuade us that contending forces fought out their territorial wars throughout the 1950s and beyond to determine which would become the prevailing definition of art. Constructed as an antagonistic duality, Matter & Conjecture is at once a test of such theory and a realization without compromise, for there is no smoothing over genuine difference on principle. The beauty of this work is in its necessary agon: to keep the engagement tantalizing.  Even so, what if matter were not inert, but an expression of the possibilities of construction?

Stefan Gritsch manages to make the most of the least, and, ringing changes on method, to find eloquence even in mere acrylic pigment--matter. Aggregates in blocks or tile panes or kneaded lumps—all are productive of a sculptural practice at once in conversation with ‘Supports / Surfaces’ and the canon of modern abstraction. Intensity is the result: intensity of material reference from a history of art that matters. So where Zapkus’s surfaces are rich in spatial memory, from aerial views and architectural plans, as if narrated by Cézanne, Gritsch’s surfaces are dense with visual knowledge infusing pigmental stuff, as if from a workshop which Naum Gabo would approve.

Kes Zapkus is an American painter born in Lithuania in 1938. He has exhibited extensively internationally and his work is in prestigious collections in the USA and abroad notably The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, Joseph Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., Museum Boymans‑van Beunignen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Brooklyn, NY – ART 3 gallery is pleased to present  Ariane Lopez-Huici The Sculptural Forms of Shani Ha. Lopez-Huici who has been photographing the naked body for many years, was faced with the unusual challenge to work with artist, Shani Ha and her wearable textile sculptures (2013-2016). Through play of light and shadows, the body whether naked or hidden inside these forms always remains as an erotic being through the lens of the artist. This exhibition will present for the first time this collaboration with both artists.

Lopez-Huici is known for her work, which focuses on the human body, transgressing the conventional canons of beauty. The artist uses black and white analog photography with a pronounced grain and deep blacks. Her series Aviva, Dalila, and Holly shows her passion for Rubenesque bodies. Her African series Adama & Omar and Kenekoubo Ogoïre develop her interest for physical and sensual expression. Rebelles and Triumph accentuates the majesty of voluptuous women. Priscille (2009-2011), nude portraits of a handicapped model, affirms, in Rodin's tradition, the true beauty and personality of the fragmented body.  As art critic David Cohen puts it: “Her images convey a sense of the body as lived-in, actual and present.” And Francis Marmande adds “ she illuminates the model, gives her the strength to transgress what we see or what we do not see." Connected to the incredible rich world of free jazz improvisation, Lopez-Huici also records in depth many of the most talented musicians of today, publishing her series, The Flying Hands of Cecil Taylor.

Ariane Lopez-Huici is a photographer living between New-York and Paris. Her work has been successfully presented internationally in institutions - Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Spain, Musee de Grenoble, France, PS1-Moma, USA, French Institute New York, USA, among many others - as well as galeries - AC Project room, NY, Galerie Franck, Paris -. She has received a strong critical interest from prominent art historians and writers, such as Arthur Danto, Edmund White, Yannick Haenel, Julia Kristeva and Carter Ratcliff. 

Following her art studies, she becomes in 1970, the assistant of the Brazilian filmmaker Nelson Pereira dos Santos, father of Brazil's Cinema Novo. She learns lighting and photographic techniques, develops a long-term attachment to the avant-garde cinema and is attracted to all forms of artistic improvisation. In 1975, she decides to dedicate herself to photography and does her first one-woman exhibition at Dartmouth College in 1977. In 1980, she moves and settles in New York with her husband, the sculptor Alain Kirili. In 2004, two major retrospectives of her work are exhibited in the Museum of Grenoble, France, and at the IVAM in Valencia, Spain. In 2008, the New York Studio School presents a retrospective of her most recent works. In 2014, Ariane Lopez-Huici and Alain Kirili showed their work in dialogue for the first time in "Parcours Croisés" at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen (France).
