Brandeis Center Announces Upcoming March Events

WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 22, 2016: This morning, The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law (LDB) announced its upcoming events for the month of March. This next wave of events will follow LDB’s Third Annual National Law Student Leadership Conference, held in California at the start of this week. LDB, a national civil rights organization, is best known for its work fighting anti-Semitism in higher education.

LDB President Kenneth L. Marcus commented, “We are excited for a full docket of events in the upcoming month.  We have been working actively to educate and speak out against anti-Semitism, and we will continue with our strong momentum.”

The upcoming events include the following:

March 3 - LDB Attorney Aviva Vogelstein will speak on a panel entitled, "The Battle on Campus and What BDS Means." The Panel is part of a 5-part series for Baltimore Jewish communal professionals, lay leaders, and students on "New Frontiers in Confronting Anti-Semitism." Vogelstein will be joined by Andrew Cohen, Hillel International's Israel Education Coordinator for the Northeast, and Rabbi Ari Israel, Executive Director of the University of Maryland Hillel, and a college student activist.

March 4 - Cornell Law’s LDB Chapter will be hosting a talk by Professor Eugene Kontorovich of Northwestern University Law School on “The New Anti-Discrimination: State Laws on Israel Boycott.” Professor Kontorovich’s research spans the fields of constitutional law, international law, and law and economics. He is also one of the world’s preeminent experts on international law and the Israel-Arab conflict, having written and lectured extensively about the legal aspects of it. His scholarship has been relied on in important foreign relations cases in the federal courts, and historic piracy cases in the U.S. and abroad.

March 9 – In Minneapolis, LDB’s President Kenneth L. Marcus will participate in a University of Minnesota panel discussion entitled “Antisemitism in Today's Europe: Between Neo-Nationalism and Global Terrorism.” The panel, moderated by Patricia Lorcin of the University of Minnesota, will discuss the current situation of anti-Semitism in Europe and will examine the new discourse of antisemitism in the context of a deadly dialectic between neo-nationalism and global terrorism. Other participants will include scholars Günther Jikeli of Indiana University and Bruno Chaouat of the University of Minnesota .

March 16 – At the University of Virginia Law School, Dr. Aleksandra Gliszczyńska-Grabias will speak at an event hosted by LDB's UVA chapter about her work on advancing an international treaty that would provide protection against discrimination and hatred based on anti-semitism and other religious grounds. Dr. Gliszczyńska-Grabias is currently a Senior Researcher at the Poznan Human Rights Centre, Institute of Legal Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She also serves as a legal advisor of the "Open Republic" Association against Antisemitism and Racism, a leading Polish NGO active in the field of counteracting intolerance, hatred and prejudice.

March 29 - LDB President Kenneth L. Marcus will be at the University of Chicago, in an event hosted by LDB's UChicago Law Student chapter, to address students on the topic of Fighting Campus Anti-Semitism.

March 30 – Professor Alexander Tsesis will be giving a talk at the University of Minnesota entitled, "Free Speech in the Age of the Internet", hosted by LDB's UMN chapter. Tsesis is a professor at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law, and is an expert in Constitutional Law, the First Amendment, Civil Procedure, as well as civil rights issues and constitutional interpretation. He is a widely published author whose articles have appeared in a variety of law reviews across the country. Professor Tsesis is also a frequent presenter to law school faculties nationwide on issues involving constitutional law, free speech, and civil rights.

March 30 – The LDB law student chapter at CUNY Law will also be hosting Dr. Aleksandra Gliszcznska-Grabias to give a talk on the subject of "Case-law of the European Court of Human Rights in cases concerning antisemitism."   

March 31 - Cornell Professor William Jacobson will be speaking at the University of Chicago. The event, co-sponsored by LDB, is being organized as a talk on diversity through U Chicago's Keystone Program. Professor Jacobson has a national reputation as a leading practitioner in securities arbitration, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Public Investors Arbitration Bar Association, an organization of over 450 attorneys dedicated to protecting public investors.

Autism Works Now! Pre-employment skills pilot program in Los Angeles to publish methods book for secondary education with Jessica Kingsley Publishers London

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 20, 2016) – Joanne Lara and Susan Osborne of Autism Movement Therapy, an LA based non-profit announced that they are signing a book contract with Jessica Kingsley Publishers London to pen an autism pre-employment methods book for secondary education to fill the overwhelming need. The methods book is due out Spring of 2017.

Executive Director of Autism Works Now! Joanne Lara tell us, “we are addressing employment too late in this country for individuals with autism. Our vision is to see middle and high school national job/work assessment tools that actually drive the public schools trade/skills based curriculum. The Director of the Autism Works Now! program Susan Osborne adds “that way our youth will exit the public school system job ready.”

In the United Stated alone, 50,000 individuals with autism graduate from the public school setting each year, either at 18 or 22 years of age, the 90% unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities speaks for itself. We are not doing a good enough job of educating our youth early on with the skills that will equate to employment in their post high school years.

A pilot program, Autism Works Now! is based in Los Angeles, and inspired by the May 2015 Temple Grandin & Friends: Autism Works Now! event at the LA Live Center in downtown Los Angeles hosted by Joe Mantegna that featured James Durbin, Susan Sheller, Lonnie Park, Chadwick, Matt and Ed Asner, Dani Bowman, Dr. Stephen Shore and Temple Grandin. Autism Works Now! educates individuals 17 years of age and up with autism and related differences in pre-employment skills in their Workplace Readiness Workshop to be job ready!

Autism Works Now! also acts as a temporary job agency to find and place individuals with ASD in meaningful jobs in their communities, equating to increased social and independent living opportunities.

Lara’s nonprofit Autism Movement Therapy, Inc produced Temple Grandin & Friends: Autism Works Now, a musically driven event honoring Dr. Grandin to support job opportunities for individuals with autism and related differences in Los Angeles, May 20th at the Club Nokia.

Joanne is a columnist for Autism Asperger’s Digest, core adjunct faculty at National University and was the autism consult for Kiefer Sutherland’s FOX show TOUCH. She authored the recently published methods book Autism Movement Therapy® Method: Waking up the Brain! and produced the documentary to air on PBS Generation A: Portraits of Autism & the Arts. Autism Works Now is a pilot program empowering young adults with autism in job readiness skills. The Autism Works Now! short documentary that grew out of Temple Grandin & Friends is slated for a spring 2016 release.  

Susan Osborne has worked in the autism education field for over 10 years. She is deeply committed to helping individuals on the autism spectrum find a place in life where they are valued and appreciated and can reach their fullest potential. Her 23-year son is unemployed and on the autism spectrum after graduating with a high school diploma 5 years ago.

South Shore Chamber of Commerce to host 4th Annual Health & Wellness Fair; exhibitors and sponsors invited to participate in March 25th event

The South Shore Chamber of Commerce (www.southshorechamber.org) the region’s largest Chamber, is excited to announce plans for its 4th Annual South Shore Health & Wellness Fair.

The highly anticipated event is slated from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 25th at the South Shore YMCA at 79 Coddington Street in Quincy.

Exhibitors and sponsors are encouraged to participate in this unique fair and be recognized as a Health and Wellness Thought Leader on the South Shore.  No sales pitches will be allowed; instead each exhibitor must provide a community service in the form of a screening, education or demonstration.

This year’s Health & Wellness Fair will offer category exclusivity; as such exhibitors are urged to reserve their space early for the greatest impact and location selection.  The fair is expected to draw more than 1,000 health and wellness minded South Shore residents, students and families. 

Areas of focus at the March 25th event are Life Cycle; Healthy From Head to Toe; Specialized Areas; and Focus on Wellness.  Sought are exhibitors who specialize in a wide-range of health and wellness fields, including infant and toddler care, geriatric care, ear and eye health, strength training, emotional health, autism, obesity, addiction, allergies, nutrition, physical therapy, chiropractic, massage and environmental health.

Marshfield Chamber of Commerce to host 2nd Annual PizzaPalooza on March1st

The Marshfield Chamber of Commerce, the most recent affiliate of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, will host its 2nd Annual PizzaPalooza on Tuesday, March 1st.

Slated from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. the PizzaPalooza will be held at Marshfield High School, 167 Forest Street.

The event will bring local restaurants and pizza establishments head-to-head in a pizza showdown, competing to win one or more Kid’s Choice, People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice awards.  Participating restaurants include: Marshfield Tavern, Polcari’s Bridgewaye Inn, Famous Pizza, Manny’s Pizza and Mamma Mia’s Restaurant.

sweetFrog® Frozen Yogurt will be served to cleanse palettes in between sample slices!
