UK, February. 16, 2016 – Pure Energy Centre (PEC) today announced that the company has, for the first time, supplied and installed a Hydrogen Electrolyzer in Croatia.

The electrolyzer system was supplied to Split University. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FESB) at the University received the system and launched the first complete renewable hydrogen laboratory in Croatia.

The FESB Faculty has installed the system within their current Laboratory for new energy technologies. The aim is to support the deployment of hydrogen technologies within Croatia.

Vincenzo Ortisi, Pure Energy Centre Senior Design Engineer said: ‘I attended the launch of the Croatian First Hydrogen Laboratory. I was pleased with the wide attendance and delighted to have had our Pure Energy Hydrogen Laboratory system selected by Professor Frano Barbir. Professor Barbir is a globally recognized figure within the hydrogen industry and has a wealth of knowledge regarding energy systems. In selecting our hydrogen system, this shows that we have something unique to offer.’

Professor Frano Barbir, Head of FESB Laboratory for new energy technologies said ‘We are very pleased with the hydrogen laboratory system we selected. Such a system can be used in remotely located chalets, offgrid systems, telecommunication systems and for cooking and small fuelling applications such as hydrogen moped. In the next couple of months we will also be looking at the viability of hydrogen fuel cell buses and will also investigate advanced hydrogen fuel cell components.’ 

How does the Hydrogen Electrolyzer system work?

The renewable hydrogen system that has been installed consists of a wind turbine, a solar photovoltaic array, a hydrogen electrolyzer, a hydrogen dryer, a hydrogen cylinder, hydrogen fuel cell and a complete remote control and monitoring system. 

The wind and solar energy is used to generate electricity which is stored in a battery bank. In the past, when the battery bank was full, the wind turbine and the solar array were shut down. However, with the new hydrogen energy system, when the battery reaches its full capacity, the electrolyzer is automatically switched on and starts generating hydrogen from water.

The electrolyzer installed in the Split University splits water into its two main constituents, from H2O into Hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2). The electrolyzer then moves the hydrogen to a dryer. This dryer dries the hydrogen to make it extra pure. The hydrogen is then stored in a hydrogen cylinder.

The battery bank is used to supply electricity when there is no power available from the wind turbine or solar photovoltaic panels. When the battery reached a certain threshold where it cannot supply electricity anymore, the fuel cell switches on. The fuel cell takes hydrogen as a fuel and generates electrical power and heat. 

The system is perfectly suited for hydrogen offgrid applications but likewise, it can be used in a hydrogen ongrid system.
