Coach of University of Wisconsin's Soccer Camp Find Substantial Benefit in New Mobile App

December 31, 2015 - For a parent to send their young athlete to a summer camp, the process is fairly straightforward. You do your research on the best camps, sign your child up, pay the fees, and then send them off. For coaching directors, it’s a whole different story. 

There are administrative tasks such as hiring skilled, trustworthy and knowledgeable staff, building your schedule, marketing to the right markets and then handling all of the registration details.  

Camp Directors are always cognizant of the enormous responsibility that has been placed on them by the parents. Coaches must ensure at all times that they are running a camp that is safe, educational, and hopefully lots of fun. 

The University Wisconsin­ Madison is host to a number of summer academic and athletic camps. Ensuring a positive experience for everyone is the utmost priority. Last summer, after considering different ways to improve information flow and communication between parents, players and staff, the Soccer Camp Director decided to use a mobile app. They chose First Touch for Camps. It had a good set of features and it was free. 

First Touch is a free mobile app used by almost a hundred thousand athletes, parents and players, student clubs and greek chapters. The First Touch app is designed to streamline and improve channels of communication and information flow. 

By having a simple but private platform, the app contains and shares all relevant camp materials like the daily schedules, releases and other documents, directions and drills. It is also one seamless platform for all communication between the camp directors, the staff, the campers and their parents. And it includes voice, text, emails, photos, videos, documents and calendars.

According to Julian Holtzman, one of the coaches at the camp, "We were able to hear about an issue instantly, on the field, and immediately answer questions. This avoided the usual pent up parent or camper frustration that would result in several calls per day. With the app, we could answer immediately, sending quick voice messages that solved problems before they escalated."

We found that First Touch Blast significantly reduced many of the normal bottlenecks that normally occur at camps. Our kids didn't have to hang around waiting for their coach to go track some piece of information down. We just had very little wasted time. 

Compared to previous years we saw that parents and campers complained less because they knew how to find everything and could easily get access from their smartphones when they had a question. 

I believe this app represents the future of how camps will be organized and run. We saved many hours of work, and a few trees because we did not have to print 200+ schedules, rules and expectations etc. for only a 3 days use.

There are a number of apps out there to do this. We liked working with First Touch: They understood our Camp needs and were quick to answer our questions. First Touch solved many of our problems. We are looking forward to using them again this summer. A number of camps I have spoken to haven't used an app yet but I think most are going to try one this summer. 

Even if it is "the future" it will take a year or two for many camps to use apps. Many just aren't early adopters I guess. I think Camps that have younger coaches or Directors do have an edge with technology. But even some of the older coaches love it when they see the time savings. It’s very individual.

Hull SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) has embarked on an innovative, fun and original marketing campaign over the last 18 months, aimed at promoting the fact that teaching in Hull schools is exciting, challenging and rewarding. By targeting local students, career changes and potential trainees from the UK and abroad through a combination of creative print and digital marketing, online promotion and real world stunts, the group has seen a number of quality recruits join the programme. Their approach, including the 'Do More, Teach!' social media campaign has set a benchmark for other UK teacher training providers to follow.

Hull, like many cities in the UK has long suffered from a shortage of teachers. There are numerous reasons behind the ongoing teacher shortage including political, financial and social aspects of the job and the various pathways to a career in teaching. The National Union of Teachers (NUT), UCAS and the UK government are well aware of the issues and are fully aware that there are no quick-fixes. Long term and sweeping strategies must be put in place to rectify the situation over an extended period of time in order for the profession to see a real change.

One fundamentally important aspect of the ongoing drive to recruit more teachers into the profession are the training providers that assist graduates and career changes to take the first steps towards a career in education. In Hull, a city that is rapidly undergoing a social and cultural revolution thanks in part to it being awarded the status of City of Culture 2017, the organization Hull SCITT is working hard to recruit and train a new generation of teachers who excel in the job.

All successful trainees who have been a part of the programme are now employed and actively making a difference to children, with the vast majority based in partnership schools across Hull. Their ‘hands on’ approach means trainees are in school from day one learning by working alongside an experienced mentor teacher. This is complimented by central training delivered through Hull Collaborative Teaching School by teachers who are Specialist Leaders of Education (SLE) which means that they are currently teaching and recognised as experts in their specific field.

Coach of Wisconsin's Division One Women's Soccer Champions Benefited From Using Their New Mobile Team App

December 31, 2015 - Poised to have a strong season and contend for the Big Ten championship in 2014, the coaches of the Division One Women’s Soccer Team at the University of Wisconsin designed their training and fitness schedules to be tougher. 

The practices and recovery sessions were streamlined and strengthened for optimal player development. And the methods of communication needed to be refined to ultimately achieve their collective goal.

For this last part, they reviewed a number of options and decided to introduce First Touch Team, a mobile app designed for better team management. According to Goalie Coach, Julian Holtzman, the improvements were instant. 

They used the gallery module to post set plays and video highlights for the student athletes to study. The calendar and alerts modules proved to be especially useful later in the season when the weather was less ­certain. Increasing the communication between the players and coaching staff fortified their bonds and set a precedent and tradition for the freshmen class to carry on.

While they didn’t win the regular­ season championship, they won the Big Ten Tournament giving them an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. 

"We achieved what we set out to do." Assistant coach Tim Rosenfeld said. "First touch gave us a “platform for dynamic coaching and team coordination.” This app just provides players with a better way to study their on­field responsibilities on their own time. Regardless of the sport and competitive level, this multi­faceted app improves many of the administrative and communication issues that can impede a team's progress."

Julian Holtzman notes that today more teams are turning to mobile apps to free players from logistical distractions allowing them to keep their "heads in the game".  

According to First Touch Team, Sales Manager, Ryan Driscoll, the number of sports teams using first touch is growing 18-20% every month (up from 10% one year ago) and  there is no sign of this growth slowing.
