Canton, OH (PRBuzz.com) August 12, 2015 -- Security consultant John M. White, CPP, reminds everyone that it is back-to-school time again and this is good time to review the basics of school safety and security as we kick off another school year.
“As I am sure we all know, the security and safety on a school campus and within the facility is the responsibility principal and school staff. However, parents can and should take appropriate measures to ensure a safe school experience while their child in at school on in transit,” said White.
These are a few of the basic tips that parents should understand and work their child before they start school:
Students need to know their travel routes to and from the school so ensure that both you and your child have designated both a primary and alternate route to and from their school. For grade school students, or students that are new to a school, parents should walk with the student several times before they make the walk on their own to point out any safety or security concerns with their route.
Talk with your child about personal and school safety and talk about personal instincts and paying attention to those “funny feelings” that they might experience and what they should do if they sense something is not right. Ensure that the children know how to contact their parents or a trusted neighbor who is likely to be at home.
“There are many security and safety issues when children are walking to and from school, and both the children and drivers need to be aware of those issues or dangers and prepare ourselves for the new year, according to White. “In the next few weeks there will be children in every city and county that will be walking to and from school and many of them will not always be watching for the dangers that may be all around them. Because of that we as adults or teenage drivers need to certain that we are doing our part to keep those kids safe,” said White.
Some additional tips to consider as we start another school year include the following:
Driver Safety Tips for School Zones
- Watch for school zone signals and follow the speed limits posted at all times.
- Watch out for children near schools, at bus stops, on the sidewalks, in the parking lots and driveways.
- When approaching a school zone, slow down and obey all traffic laws and watch for children.
- Be observant for school crossing guards and obey their signals.
- Stop for school busses that are loading or unloading children, know your state laws.
Walking to School
- Teach and demonstrate safety awareness with your child and determine the safest route between your home and the school campus and practice walking it with your children.
- Teach your child to take the same route everyday and to not use short cuts through yards or business properties, including parking lots.
- Teach your child how to use the buddy system so they whenever possible they do not walk alone.
- Teach your children about traffic safety such as traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings, and teach them to use marked crosswalks when crossing a street.
- Teach your child to never get into a vehicle with anyone even if they know them without your permission.
