In 2014, The JM Smucker Co led off-trade volume sales of coffee, with a 25% share. However, 2014 saw its off-trade volumes slipped by 1%. JM Smucker’s main product is the economy-positioned Folgers brand. The brand grew in popularity during the recession due to its low cost, but as the economy has recovered sales have declined. Fortunately, JM Smucker also benefits from its licensing agreements with Dunkin’ Donuts, through which retail volume sales increased by 37% over the 2009-2014 review period, indicative of the growing trend and consequent success of foodservice branded retail coffee.

Off-trade volume sales of coffee are projected to increase by 4% over the forecast period, to reach 829,717 tonnes by 2019. Off-trade value sales of coffee are expected to be more significant than volume growth, with a projected growth of 9% at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period, to reach US$14.0 billion by 2019.This growth will continue to come from fresh ground coffee pods, off-trade value sales of which are expected to grow by 25% at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period. In addition, a movement towards more expensive premium varieties of coffee beans will help to drive growth in most categories. Accordingly, constant unit prices are projected to increase by 5% over the same period. The consumer switch to fresh ground coffee pods, as described above, will be responsible for some of this price increase. In addition to this, recent droughts in Brazil, the largest coffee producer in the world, may further impact prices.
